Fire Piston Description
A
Fire Piston works on the same principal as a Diesel Engine. When
rapidly compressed the air heats up to over 500 degrees thus igniting a
tinder. Fire Pistons will light many natural tinders found in natural
settings, therefore they are perfect for hiking, camping and survival
situations. Unlike gas filled lighters, fire pistons rely on natural
materials that are always available.

Fire Piston History
The fire piston was
used in the early 1800's by people of South East Asia and the Pacific
Islands as a means of fire starting. An 1876 New York Times reported it
earliest use in the west as early at 1745. Since then it was
reinvented and introduced to scientist in 1802. It is believed that
the fire piston may have inspired Rudolf Diesel to create the diesel
engine.

Why It Works?
Rapid
compression of a gas (known as adiabatic compression) increases its
pressure and its temperature The same principle is used in the diesel engine to ignite the fuel
in the cylinder rather than the spark plug used in the gasoline engine.
at the same time.
